“All lives have equal value.”

I wrote a new essay about MicroFinance, based on what I learned at the recent conference “Microfinance from Below: The Power of Savings and Savings Groups in Frontier Economics.” To read, it please click here.

In the article I explain the nature of microfinance, differentiate between micro-savings and micro-lending and describe the market these services reach.

While doing so I also consider the nature of poverty and the limitations of banks when it comes to serving the impoverished. This in turn leads me to describe second-generation banking and the nature of group influence inside developing economies.

To conclude, I question the structure of the lending institutions and examine some of the investment trends that are shaping the future of small-scale investment.

Hi Kai, nice essay. My wife and I do charitable micro-lending through Kiva – you can read about our experience here: http://www.chadwiebesick.com/blog/2008/3/4/pay-it-forward-with-kiva.html
