Idea of the Day: Give away your extra customers

“Too much of a good thing…”

My neighbor is a great guy, a genuine people pleaser with a mile wide smile. An auto mechanic by trade, he started his own business a few years ago. Not surprisingly perhaps, it’s thriving even in our current recession.

But he has a problem. He has too many customers.

His company employees 3 full-time mechanics for 2 garage bays, so they can’t grow much more. In addition to consumer vehicles they also manage fleet maintenance for some large organizations. These include hospitals, so when ambulances come in (always unexpectedly) he has to drop everything. There’s a trickle down effect of course, that is making it more difficult for him to maintain his high levels of customer service. He can no longer please all of his customers all of the time.

What to do?

If I were him I’d give those harder-to-please clients away. I’d find a relatively new garage that is hungry for business, work out an arrangement for my customers to receive an introductory discount when they visit his garage, and watch the win-win-win work its magic.
