I’ve been seeing this error quite a bit recently, and finally figured out how to solve it:
It first appeared when I was registering for Gist, a free application that imports and manages information about all of your contacts. I couldn’t get their system to connect to Facebook, even though it was working fine with my Gmail, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts. Since Gist is fairly new I thought the error was occurring because of their programming. My bad (sorry guys!).
This morning I received the exact same error when setting up HootSuite, another free application. This one lets me import and manage all of my social media accounts from one console. The HootSuite feature I like best is “publish later.” Using this, I can spend 30-60 minutes collecting useful information on Monday morning, then schedule it for publication throughout the week.
But I was having a problem connecting with the Free Marketing Made Easy Facebook page. This was that exact same error that I saw earlier in Gist, so now I was beginning to think that the problem was on the Facebook side. After going through all of my settings and re-testing, I finally Googled the phrase “Request for Special Permissions” and discovered that this is in fact a browser issue. Specifically, Firefox has something going on that prevents the Facebook connection from working properly. So if you receive this error simply switch to Safari (for Mac) or Internet Explorer (for PC) during the set up phase of your account. Once your connection to Facebook is successfully made, you can go back and manage the account through your regular browser.
